Search tips

Habits that find the right frame faster, and a person who will search for you when they don't.

  1. Search for one idea at a time

The search box finds photographs whose title, headline, caption, keywords or description contain every word you type, in any order; plurals and other word endings count as the same word. Put words in quotes to match them as a phrase, as in "Brooklyn rooftop". Type or between two words to accept either, and a minus before a word to leave it out, as in rooftop -night. If a search finds nothing, try its strongest single word.

  2. Use names the way a caption would

Captions name people, places and events the way a newspaper does: full names, the city, the venue. Search for “Madison Square Garden” rather than “MSG”, and a last name on its own when a first name might be spelled two ways.

  3. Follow a keyword

Every photograph page lists its keywords. Choose one and the results narrow to frames tagged with exactly that keyword, which is the quickest way from one good picture to the rest of the shoot.

  4. Refine by shape and date

On the results, choose Horizontal, Vertical or Square to match your layout, and Newest to put the latest additions first.

  5. Check the use before you fall for a frame

A photograph marked “Editorial use only” has no model or property release on file and cannot be licensed for advertising. The license options on its page show which uses are open.
